In our percussion workshops a number of instruments are played on: djembe, doundoun, sanbang, kenkeni, shakers and bells. Your group gets challenged to create a rhythm from a number of (often easy) rhythmic patterns. By working together the result will be a swinging creation.
To play percussion is nearly like non-verbal communication; if the group is listening to each other, then they make music. If they don’t listen, then they make noise. In Africa, percussion, dance and singing are indissoluble linked. So singing is very often part of this workshop too.
It’s a very good possibility that you won’t be able to sit still behind your djembe. More likely you will be swinging around the room with the shaker!
